WhatsApp calls are blocked here
Egyptian networks block VoIP: WhatsApp, FaceTime and Messenger calls generally don't work on a local SIM. Messages and photos go through; voice and video calls don't.
A travel eSIM runs over roaming and usually isn't caught by that block. If you plan to call home rather than only text, that's the real argument for an eSIM in Egypt.

Data costs more here than elsewhere
The best price per gigabyte in Egypt is roughly seven times what Thailand costs. That's not a glitch in the table — it's the market: less competition, higher wholesale rates.
Practically, it means the choice of plan matters more here than in Southeast Asia. Over-buying costs real money rather than loose change.

Networks and coverage
Orange EG and Vodafone EG cover Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea coast reliably. Etisalat matches them in cities and falls behind in the desert.
The gaps are predictable: the desert road between Luxor and Hurghada, the Valley of the Kings away from the main paths, parts of Sinai, and Nile cruises between moorings. Abu Simbel has coverage; much of the drive there does not.

How much data
A week across Cairo and Luxor with maps, a translator and photos: 3 GB is enough. Two weeks including a Nile cruise is closer to 5 GB — there's Wi-Fi on board, but it's slow and often paid. Don't plan around it.
The table above carries live prices, re-checked daily. The calculator below asks for your days and usage and names the cheapest plan for that trip.
Before you fly
Install the eSIM at home. Free Wi-Fi at Cairo airport is unreliable, and the SIM stands in arrivals charge several times the prices above.
